A few years back - in the Bush Administration - I would have hesitated to publish this letter, even "anonymously" on my blog at the time, where I was writing about solutions, Fortune 500 companies, surveillance, the movie Zeitgeist, etc. Because, being honest with myself I was aware that while I was perhaps anonymous to my blog readers, if I or the ideas I was expressing were perceived to be a sufficient threat to anyone to be worth bothering about, I had insufficient knowledge to maintain anonymity to anyone who actually wanted to know who/where I was. Fast forward to the end of 2011 - when President Obama "announced [his] intent to sign into law the indefinite detention bill embedded in the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA)." When combined with "Don’t Be Fooled: The Horrible Anti-Internet Bill Is NOT Being Shelved Until Next Year" I now feel that Cory Doctorow's 2008 book Little Brother (read, share and remix it free of charge - for now) truly could reflect a "day after tomorrow" scenario in this country. To the 99% - you do know that your "mics" allow your location to be tracked and monitored, right? Just checking. This nearly four year old blog post should give you some idea of where our Panopticon society has likely arrived as we count down the days to 2012. Meanwhile, I plan to continue my efforts to form a global non profit project which will help people be more self sufficient, have more food security and collaborate with each other both locally and globally; that's what this website will continue to focus on. At the same time, I also recognise that in a "day after tomorrow" scenario FEMA might well come knocking at my door to confiscate and redistribute any food I (or we) do manage to grow. Our Peace Officers, members of the armed forces and elected officials all swear oaths to "support and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic" http://oathkeepers.org/oath/ Members of the military also swear oaths to "obey the orders of the President of the United States" So what would happen if a President of the United States were to become an enemy of the Constitution? Hmmm. Food for thought. Next summer is scheduled to be the Summer of Peace. Make it so. I close this open letter with a few of my favorite quotes. The first one is from Frank Herbert's Dune series, "I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain." "Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear." Ambrose Redmoon "No effort, no work, no job, no savings of money. Just a simple choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love instead see all of us as one. Here's what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would pay for many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace." "We all hang together or we hang separately" I agree whole heartedly with your comments.

There comes a point in all of our lives when we have to ask ourselves on which side of the future do we stand.

I've always been a non conformist. I don't follow for the sake of following, but follow for the ideals of the organization or person.

Thank you all for your comments! @Nance - the Summer of Peace I think is still in the planning stages, but keep an eye on the website I linked to above. http://www.summerofpeace.net/main.html There's also a FB page as well. I'm not totally sure whether it's a single organization organizing things or perhaps multiple groups like the Occupy Movement. http://www.facebook.com/peacetakers

Lots of ugly stuff going down in the world today. The right to free speech is a right that many of us currently have. Any attempt to wind this back, has to be negative.

"His peaceful resistance shook the foundations of an empire, exposed the emptiness of a repressive ideology, and proved that moral leadership is more powerful than any weapon," President Barack Obama said in a statement.

it's heartening to find more and more people speaking up, finding their stance of "creative resistance." i loved your quotes and thought i'd add this to the mix...

I am especially interested in the comment that people are speaking up more. I have to agree. I am thinking more about whether I feel that this is more divisive or congealing for society.

As I was reading this I thought of the famous, "All it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing"

Ben Franklin said we could choose freedom or security, not both. I'm down for freedom, with security a distant second. What IS security, anyway? Usually defined by a surrender of rights. #fail.
